Our Story
Heather Glen Farm has a long and exciting history. Here is it's story and why we decided to convert it into the perfect place for a day out.
Early Beginnings
Heather Glen Farm was established in the 1700s by Duncan MacLaren, a visionary farmer and landowner. Duncan, a man of remarkable foresight, recognized the fertile potential of the land in the Scottish Borders. He began cultivating the fields, raising livestock, and building the foundations of what would become a thriving agricultural enterprise. The MacLaren family home, a sturdy stone farmhouse, still stands as a centerpiece of the farm, echoing tales of its storied past.

A Soldier's Haven
In the early 1800s, the farm’s proximity to a notable battlefield from the Jacobite risings turned it into a temporary camp for soldiers. The fields of Heather Glen provided a strategic resting point for troops. The old barns, still standing today, once sheltered weary soldiers and their horses. Stories of camaraderie and resilience from those tumultuous times have become an integral part of the farm’s lore.

Second World War
During World War II, Heather Glen Farm played a crucial role in providing refuge for evacuees from Glasgow. The sprawling farmhouse and outbuildings were transformed into safe havens for families escaping the bombings. The MacLaren family, led by then-owner Angus MacLaren, welcomed the evacuees with open arms, providing them with shelter, food, and a sense of community during those dark days. This period saw the farm's fields and gardens worked by many hands, all contributing to the war effort and survival.

The Commune Era
The 1960s brought a wave of change and unconventional thinking to Heather Glen Farm. For a brief period, it became a commune for a group of idealistic individuals seeking an alternative lifestyle. This eclectic group, drawn to the farm’s serene and isolated beauty, lived off the land, sharing resources and responsibilities. Though their stay was temporary, it left an indelible mark on the farm's history, contributing to its rich tapestry of stories.

Modern Era
Today, Heather Glen Farm is owned and operated by Fiona and Alistair MacLaren, direct descendants of the original founder, Duncan MacLaren. The couple, deeply connected to their ancestral land, decided to share the beauty and history of Heather Glen with a wider audience. Recognizing the farm’s potential as a tourist attraction, they embarked on a journey to transform it into a place where visitors can experience the charm of rural life and the depth of its historical significance.

Why convert?
Fiona and Alistair saw an opportunity to preserve the farm’s heritage while adapting to the changing times. They aimed to create a sustainable future for Heather Glen Farm by diversifying its offerings and inviting people to explore its many facets. The scenic trails, live farm demonstrations, workshops, adventure playground, and petting zoo all serve to educate and entertain visitors, fostering a deeper appreciation for agriculture and history.

The decision to open Heather Glen Farm to the public was driven by a desire to honor the past while ensuring the farm’s viability for future generations. Fiona and Alistair believe that by sharing their family’s legacy, they can inspire others to value and protect the rich heritage of the Scottish countryside.
